The 46.2mm diameter solid two-body case, downturned lugs, small angled bezel and large crown are brushed bronze with amazing patina. The dial is Matte military green with luminous lozenge hands, luminous Arabic numeral hour markers and baton indexes, a center sweep second hand, and an outer minute/second track. There is a date aperture window at 12 o’ clock and a Small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. Under the titanium embossed caseback is a movement that is also completely different from what’s used in a regular Big Pilot’s watch. A hand-wound engine, the calibre 59235 is a large and powerful in-house movement that can store up to 192 hours or 8 days of power reserve, with a single, oversized barrel. It runs at a 4Hz frequency and despite being almost entirely hidden, it is pleasantly decorated with Geneva stripes and bevelling. A small circular window allows a view on the power reserve indicator, a necessary feature when having a movement with such a long power reserve.

This IWC Big Pilot Big Date Spitfire ’Mission Accomplished’ Bronze Limited Edition IW510506 has a mechanical automatic self-winding IWC caliber 59235 movement with Côtes de Genève decoration. It’s rhodium-plated, with oeil-de-perdrix embellishment, and a shock absorber mechanism. It’s constructed with 260 Components and 30 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, and a Glucydur beryllium alloy balance with a high-precision adjustment cam on the balance arms. It includes a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and a hacking seconds mechanism. It has a Soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. The in-house automatic 59235 calibre employs ceramic and zirconium oxide to make the self-winding action resilient to wear, while the indexless balance and Breguet spring together refine precision.
