DESCRIPTION

This watch features:

The big hand-wound Tourbillon with Chronograph from Audemars Piguet’s Jules Audemars series is in many respects an outstanding wristwatch. The list of superlatives begins with the watch’s sheer size: The tourbillon itself comes in at a diameter of 10.9 millimeters, its rotating cage ranks among the largest ever produced. No other manufacture installs such large tourbillons in its wristwatches. The chronograph may look rather simple, but it embodies a degree of technical finesse that’s seldom seen in comparable watches: This one is equipped with a column-wheel and a coupling-lever that support an especially precise adjustment of the chronograph’s gear-train. A bit of technology that reduces the likelihood of the chronograph’s second-hand leaping into motion with a lurch when the chronograph function is switched on to less than 5%. Other attributes likely to set new records are the extremely limited series in which this model is manufactured,

Approximately 10 specimens are crafted each year! The reasons for this low number are twofold: the extreme complexity of the watch itself, of course, and, sadly, the chronic shortage of first-rate watch-makers who have amassed a sufficient number of years of training to be skilled enough to assemble such a magnificent watch.

The one-minute tourbillon complication is located on the front side of the movement just above the “6.” Thanks to its unusually large size, the tourbillon can be readily observed as it does its work. Every detail of the escapement, including the escape wheel and lever, comes into plain view during the interval of one revolution. A Breguet balance spring, a screw balance with adjustable poising screws for fine regulation, and a KiF Elastor shock absorber form the basis for the tourbillon. The balance oscillates at a pace of 21,600 beats per hour. The watch is wound by hand, a task made all the more enjoyable by the help of a pleasantly large crown optimally
grooved so that it fits perfectly between your fingers. The power reserve lasts for approximately 48 hours, not an extraordinarily long period of time, but long enough so that you can leave the watch unworn for more than a day. On the other hand, it’s also quite nice that the power reserve is rather brief, because that means you can enjoy the pleasure of watching the movement and the tourbillon come back to life over and over again.
