Audemars Piguet Carrée Vintage Teardrop Ref. 4876BA in Solid 18kt Yellow Gold, featuring its Distinctive Sculpted “Teardrop” Lugs, Stunning Glossy White Dial with Raised Black Roman Numeral Hour Markers, Elegant Leaf-Shaped Hands and Railway-Track Square Small Seconds Sub-Dial at 6 o’clock, Ultra-Thin Manual-Winding Audemars Piguet Caliber 2085 Mechanical Movement with 22 Jewels, Black Alligator Leather Strap with 18kt Yellow Gold Audemars Piguet Tang Buckle. The beautifully proportioned Carrée case represents a very different chapter of Audemars Piguet design, one defined by elegance, architecture and restraint. Crafted entirely in solid 18kt yellow gold and measuring under 6mm in thickness, the square case has an exceptionally refined profile, but it is the extraordinary sculpted teardrop lugs that give this watch its unmistakable personality. Their flowing, almost jewelry-like form creates a beautiful contrast against the strong geometry of the case, transforming what could have been a traditional square dress watch into something far more distinctive and artistic. The glossy white dial is equally special. Raised black Roman numerals surround beautifully shaped leaf hands, while the small seconds indication at 6 oclock is enclosed within its own square railway-track register, deliberately echoing the architecture of the case. There is a wonderful sense of proportion throughout the entire composition. Nothing feels crowded or unnecessary, and the stark black-and-white dial framed by warm yellow gold gives the watch an elegance that feels just as relevant today as it did when originally produced. Inside beats the ultra-thin manually wound Audemars Piguet Caliber 2085, a 22-jewel mechanical movement based upon the highly regarded Frédéric Piguet Caliber 810 architecture. Its slender construction allowed Audemars Piguet to maintain the remarkably thin profile of the Carrée while preserving the traditional ritual and mechanical character of a manually wound haute horlogerie timepiece. For the serious collector, the Ref. 4876BA becomes especially intriguing because it represents an Audemars Piguet that is rarely seen today. Long before the Royal Oak came to dominate the modern identity of the manufacture, Audemars Piguet produced extraordinary shaped watches whose value was found in proportion, precious-metal craftsmanship and daring case design. The Carrées combination of an ultra-thin square gold case, sculptural teardrop lugs, Roman dial and fine manual-winding movement makes it an exceptionally distinctive configuration. As collectors continue rediscovering important shaped watches from the great maisons, surviving examples such as this have developed an entirely new appeal. It is elegant enough to disappear beneath a cuff, unusual enough to be recognized across a room, and unmistakably from a period when Audemars Piguet was willing to make watches that looked like nothing else.
